The monastery of Agios Nikolaos Tzoras is located on Mount Driskos on the southeastern outskirts of the basin of Ioannina, just 3km from the settlement of Bassiliki. According to an illegible engraved inscription on the west side of the ledger, the temple was built. In 1663 the church was renovated and decorated with frescoes according to the lintel inscription inside the temple. Thirty-two years later, in 1695, another small church dedicated to St Paraskevi was built and decorated with frescoes, northeast of the monastery.
The Tzoras Monastery had previously been one of the most prosperous monasteries of the region and had a remarkable fortune. This property was the reason for the two robberies that took place in the monastery during the years 1886 and 1888. The monastery suffered several disasters during the civil war and the renovation and repair of cells began in 1994.
The monastery is a one-aisled basilica with narthex, nave and sanctuary Step. Valuable paintings are preserved on the eastern side of the portico and the Despotic icons of the wooden iconostasis are also very interesting. The monastery is connected with the historic battle of Driskos during the struggle for liberation of Ioannina from Turks. A few meters away from the monastery, the poet and national hero Lorenzos Mavilis died, who at the age of 52 enlisted with the rank of captain in the volunteer corps of Garibaldi to take part in the battles of the Balkan front for the liberation of Ioannina. His bones after having stayed at Ioannina until 1933, were returned to Driskos and placed in a cenotaph bearing the inscription with the last words of the poet “I did not expect such a great honour, to die for Greece.”
