The Folklore Museum “Costas Frontzos” was established by the Company of Epirotic Studies (C.E.S.) and the Ionian and Adriatic Area Foundation (I.A.A.F.) to rescue, collect and utilze various objects of the Epirotic Folk Culture. One of the main goals of the company of Epirotic Studies is caring for the promotion of the local culture through the preservation of the material culture of the past. The objects of the museum were collected by its inspirer and founder, Kostas Frontzos (1904 – 1986), who served as Mayor of Ioannina and Chairman of C.E.S.
The contribution of Costas Frontzos in the completion of the Folklore collection was crucial. Therefore, to honour his offer and work, the boards of both institutions named the museum after him: Folklore Museum “Costas Frontzos”.
The exhibits are dated from the 19th and 20th centuries. These are objects of the Epirotic, folk, pre-industrial civilization as a) male and female traditional costumes, b) works of embroidery and weaving, c) pottery, d) goldsmith and silversmith projects, e) works of stone sculpture and wood carving, f) household appliances, g) agricultural and livestock tools. On the ground floor, left of the entrance, there is a space for temporary exhibitions. On the first floor, there is a permanent exhibition of traditional costumes from the wider region of Epirus, which was organised under the supervision of Popi Zora (1924-2007), Director of the Museum of Greek Folk Art and President of the Greek Folklore Museology.
Apart from the costumes , special samples of silverware from Ioannina are exhibited, as well as a number of weapons which date back to the 19th century.
