Apart from its natural beauty, Lake Pamvotis is ideal for sports activities such as water skiing and rowing. The centre of these activities is The Nautical Club of Ioannina, located in one of most beautiful areas of the magnificent lake.
Rowing is one of the sports activities developed in the area of Lake Pamvotis, together with water skiing. The focus of these activities is The Nautical Club of Ioannina, located in one of the most beautiful areas of the magnificent lake. The Nautical Club of Ioannina was founded in 1954. 60 particularly fruitful and effective years have passed ever since, while the contribution of the Club in the development and spread of rowing has been essential, both for the city of Ioannina and the rest of Greece. Main target of the Club has been the creation of a major rowing center which would serve rowing and canoe-kayak groups. The outcome of these methodical efforts is the organization of the Mediterranean Rowing Races at the NOI sports facilities in 1991. This major event contributed to the development of the Club, along with the holding of the World Rowing Junior Championship in 1970, the Mediterranean Games in 1991, the Greek Rowing Cup in 1993 and 1998, all the Balkan races and every Greek Rowing Championship until 2004, when the Olympic facilities were constructed at Schinias.
Additionally, the group has succeeded in promoting a number of champions and Olympic winners such as Tonia Svaier, who represented our country in three successive Olympics (Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta).
