The monastery of St Georgios Peristeras is located in the area of Dourouti within the campus of Ioannina. Both the monastery and the surrounding area took their name from George Douroutis, a benefactor from Kalarrytes who probably owned the homonymous area. The monastery is dedicated to saint George and is a three-aisled basilica. During its history the monastery experienced periods of prosperity but also decline phases. An important point in its modern history has been the restoration of 1989 by the rectors of the University of Ioannina. The restored church now serves as the University Temple and the cell buildings house the boardroom and the library.
