The temple is located near Anexartisias Street where the commercial center of the city previously was. It is also known as “Agios Nikolaos Loutrou” because it was built near one of the oldest hammams of the town of Ioannina.
At the same position a temple from the early 17th century presumed to exist. The reconstruction of the church dates to the period between 1647 and 1749. In 1820 it suffered damages from the sultan’s troops and was reconstructed in the period 1837-1842 with donations of Zosima brothers and George Hatzikonstas. George Chatzikonstas, a trader originating from Ioannina, who spent most of his life in Constantinople and Moscow, was the one who financed the reconstruction of temples, churches and schools in the region of Epirus, while participating in fundraising for supporting education.
Elements of the Temple
The church is a three aisle basilica while in the north, west and south side an arcade is developed formed by arcs. The inner wall painting of the church is not particularly detailed whilst special interest deserve the despotic icons of Russian origin which indicate the connection of the church with its benefactors and donors who were active members of the Greek community of Russia in the 19th century. G. Chatzikonstas relics are distinguished, especially a 1837 gospel with silver bindings, a grail, a disc and an asterisk of 1828.
